Major Renovation

Originally a 1927 California Bungalow on a 465m² block, this home has been transformed into a spacious and modern residence while retaining its historic character. The renovation added a two-storey rear extension, turning the modest three-bedroom house into a five-bedroom family home with a study and four bathrooms.

The ground floor now opens seamlessly to the backyard, creating a true indoor–outdoor entertaining space through full open-plan living. To the upper levels, striking material selections set the tone: Cementil Barestone cladding to the front and rear façades, paired with Monument Matt standing seam metal cladding to the side façades, give a contemporary edge. The use of recycled red and blue clinker bricks, shipped from Victoria, adds texture and warmth while meeting the client’s brief for a bold, timeless finish.

Technical challenges were a hallmark of the build. Carefully tying the original lime mortar brickwork into the new structure required precision and sensitivity, ensuring the old and new sat in harmony. Meanwhile, manoeuvring 8-metre structural steel beams into place was essential to achieve the vast open-plan layout at the rear — a feat of both engineering and craftsmanship.

The result is a home that honours its Californian Bungalow roots while embracing modern living, blending historic charm with bold, contemporary design.
